History: Sailor Mars Wiki, Her Sailor Moon Wiki Entry, and a plot synopsis for the series.

Unfortunately there is no real timeline for Rei in these entries, just on her background. So, I'll provide at a brief one. If more detail is required I'm happy to give it. Rei was born in 1978, her mother died when she was 7 and she was shuffled off to live with her grandfather at Hikawa shrine by her politician father. Rei began to show signs of psychic ability at around that time, such as being able to see the future, or knowing when danger was going to happen, or being able to communicate with Phobos and Deimos, the two crows that lived at the shrine.

The events of the Sailor Moon series begin in 1992 when she was 14, and she awakens to her senshi powers then. She is a main character involved in the plot of the series, which is linked above, which continues till she's 16. At that time skips ahead at the end of the series to the year 2000, when Usagi and Mamoru ascend to the throne of Earth and are married in the final chapter of the manga. The intervening years are touched on briefly in commentary sprinkled throughout the time travel Dark Moon arc and characters discussing their plans like finishing high school, college, and travel during the Stars Arc. Basically with the characters all living ordinary lives until it's time for the wedding and their return to duty guarding the royal family.

Hometown/World: Tokyo, Jyuuban Ward, Earth. Rei's Earth is undergoing a series of changes at her current canonpoint. Rei's Earth also has supernatural elements, such as the protagonists themselves and various monsters and demonic entities. Her solar system also contains a 10th hidden planet called Nemesis, and Pluto is considered a planet still.

Personality:

Rei Hino is often described as the ideal Japanese woman, with a regal bearing that causes even Luna to believe she’s the Moon Princess she was searching for. She is beautiful, intelligent, and reserved, with a penchant for being somewhat aloof. To people that she does not know, she often comes across as cold and uncaring, or sarcastic and distant. This is caused at least in part by her strange psychic abilities, which have made some local people afraid of her. It's because of this that she created a sort of mental and emotional barrier that she uses to keep people out. It also lends strength to her notably biting wit when it comes to dealing with people that annoy her.

She lives up to her title of the Goddess of Flame and Passion as when she sets herself to a task she dedicates herself fully to it, approaching it with her whole heart. This can cause her to sort of tunnel vision, and her passion is a bit of a double edged sword by her own admission. She focuses on things or people too much, and worries that she'll burn them up with her dedication.

Balance is an important concept to Rei, especially in regards to her personal life. Rei stresses how vital she views balance in life with her friends, who all tend towards extreme displays like Ami with studying or Makoto with cooking or Usagi with devouring everything in sight. Rei doesn't do those sorts of things, and when she sees her friends overdoing it she's always quick to remind them that they might should consider balancing themselves out a bit more. She doesn't always live up to the advice though, which often gets her teased, but she does try at least.

She has a bit of a temper as well, just like the fire she commands. When pressed, Rei will get extremely angry and lash out at anyone bothering her. She isn't usually physically violent, but she has a tendency to say very mean things when she's angry, and she holds grudges for life if you truly wrong her in some way. Her temper doesn't manifest in yelling and screaming tantrums, but rather cold words and the occasional slap most of the time. Sometimes she'll have a petty reaction and do something more physical like snapping a ruler Minako had been prodding her with, but that is reserved more for comedic frustrations rather than genuine anger. Basically Rei has buttons and it doesn't matter who you are, if you press some of those then be prepared for a very, very, unfriendly reaction.

This is a bit different when dealing with her friends however, the other Senshi in particular. She often attempts to act as a sort of big sister towards them, though her maturity and distant nature often find themselves at odds with her overenthusiastic companions. Rei genuinely cares for each and every one of them in different ways, and it shows despite her best efforts to hide it. When the facade does break, she can be every bit as enthusiastic and friendly as Usagi is bubbly, but such displays are extremely rare and always as part of a group where it's 'okay' for her to show that side of herself.

This gentle, friendly side also manifests around people she feels that she can respect or relate to. Those that are like minded, people who understand the spiritual side of life, or otherwise impress her get a much more favorable reaction. She's more likely to be protective of them, or try to comfort and reassure them. These are the people she craves attention from and looks to form attachments with. That isn't to say she's unkind to strangers she's trying to help, merely that she's more kind to certain types of people.

Another major personality trait for Rei is her distrust of men. She has had very few respectable males in her life, and as such has formed a relatively low opinion of them, regarding them as emotionally weak. Her father, in particular, helped craft this opinion, having abandoned her emotionally when she was very young due to his work. She's not above using men (as we see her do at the beach to get free drinks) to get things that she wants though, she just doesn’t particularly trust them. That said? She has managed to form a lasting friendship with Mamoru Chiba and Motoki Furuhata, but she is still a fairly bitter person. She never, ever forgives her father throughout the course of the canon for essentially abandoning both her and her mother to further his career. To her he is the very vision of someone not to become, and she hates him with a passion.

The trait that most sets Rei apart from most people is her spirituality. She is a Shinto priestess at the Hikawa shrine and is deeply committed to that path. She dreams of becoming the head priest at the shrine in the future, eventually taking over for her grandfather. Shinto, the spiritual native religion of Japan, holds a major influence over nearly every aspect of her life. She disdains modern society, maintaining that it is better to practice the old ways rather than the new. Rei is skilled at meditation, and makes it a point to center herself nightly. She observes various Shinto rituals, and as such could be described as a superstitious person. For Rei, the spirits of the world are very much real, and very much important. Her anachronistic ways do often put her at odds with friends, particularly her dislike of many modern things. Television, video games, and other parts of most teenagers’ lives are things she actively avoids. This isn't to say she's ignorant of them, she just chooses not to utilize them.

Rei’s relationship with the others is also somewhat different due to her family’s wealth. She attends a private (EXPENSIVE), Catholic school, as opposed to the other Senshi, who attend public schools. She summarily has received a better basic education in many ways, which is something that occasionally causes her to snark at them. She can also be described as somewhat snotty, and definitely not interested in the foolishness that people often engage in, including her friends. This prominently is displayed in her dealings with less refined people like Usagi, who earns her ire more often than anyone else. She often gets cold, displaying her sarcastic side a bit more prominently.

When it comes to the more supernatural aspects of her life, Rei is bold and aggressive, like the fire she's so attuned to. She doesn't defend well, she just attacks, leaving this up to the rest of her team. Which is in keeping with her temper. She's always in the vanguard, and as the guardian goddess of war this is where she feels she belongs. Sailor Mars is a warrior at heart, and everything about how she approaches her senshi duties speaks to that. She's the most offense oriented member of the inner guardians and she's prone to the same brash notions as her namesake Mars, the Roman God of War, and she even has twin crows named Phobos and Deimos to aid her much like Mars's own children did him. Mars strives to be helpful, and acts as the secondary leader of the Inner guardians when Venus is otherwise preoccupied or things split up. She's harsh and acts swiftly and decisively.

Her abilities, having manifested in her normal life as well, are a source of concern and worry for her. In addition to emotional abandonment from her father, she has endured ostracism from most people her age because she is strange. She can talk to people normally, but it's made evident that her abilities draw consternation and fear in her debut chapter, with housewives gossiping about her within earshot.

Rei has a strong bond with her entire cast, but the Inner Sailor Senshi in particular. Usagi Tsukino, Minako Aino, Makoto Kino, and Ami Mizuno are all basically sisters to her, as well as comrades-in-arms. The five of them have fought, bled, and died together time and time again throughout the course of the canon. They've built lives together, fought wars together, and will pretty much continue being together until the heat death of the universe. One of the strongest moments that they have as a group is when each and every one of them lays down their lives to defeat Queen Beryl, shoving their souls into a collective effort to undo the evil queen and her mad designs for dominion over the Earth. It's a moment of deep connection, when they unite behind a common cause and set aside their dreams for the greater good.

Faith, Loyalty and Duty. These are also characteristics that are absolutely essential to Rei and to all of the other Sailor Senshi. Rei has actually died to protect her ideals with total conviction in her allies ability to carry through and save everyone. She's willing to put it all on the line for a victory, which marks a major growth in her. Early in the series she was headstrong and wanted to work alone but time and teamwork did wear her down. She's become someone who can just put her comfort second for the good of a group, set aside her fear and desire to make things work, and just act as a part of a team. That's what the Sailor Senshi do, all of them, but Rei has often been shown to be among the most loyal and dedicated. She takes hits for her friends, goes into danger alone so that others can escape, and uses her bold, aggressive nature to force her way forward and get others to let her help.

Addendum for Reapplication:

As I am re-apping Rei with her game memories, I feel that I should touch on some of the changes that occurred during her time in the game.

The first and foremost change is that she became a good bit more open with certain people, as she was exposed to and had close relationships with individuals outside of the Sailor Senshi and her grandfather. She's been through a great deal of strife and conflict and found herself needing to be able to rely on others, especially for emotional support. Relatedly, she has grown more emotionally open, as well. She's more willing to share her feelings, more able to accept emotional closeness with others, and more willing to reach out and form new bonds. The dream world forced her to do that or struggle with isolation that even someone as stubborn as her recognized as detrimental.

The second is that her feelings on secrecy regarding her powers and abilities have begun to erode. She's much, much more willing to transform and fight in front of non-senshi without finding an excuse to get them away. The dangers presented in Deerington have also made her a touch paranoid, and she's much more on board with using her powers in shows of overwhelming force to kill or drive off monsters. The warping effects of the dream on her powers have made her observe small rituals to clean herself after each use of her abilities, and she's gained several small tics related to their use as well, such as never touching a person after transforming until she's purified herself.

Finally, Rei has moved past some of her misandry, having made friends and become companions with men and boys in game. Her internal biases are less pronounced, and she's certainly more willing to approach, befriend, and accept them into her life than she was before arriving. Lance, Majima, and Kurama are some specific examples, but generally she's more accepting.

Personal Moral Codes: Rei is a fairly moral and kind person. She believes in practicing what she preaches, telling the truth, and generally showing compassion when it is due. She does not want to hurt people, and is quick to accept requests for aid. She doesn't abuse her powers, or seek to rule, and fights to defend Earth and Humanity from evil and alien forces. She will put her life on the line for other people and defend the innocent and those in need unquestioningly. She's given her life in battles multiple times to save mankind.

However, Rei is also a soldier, the bodyguard to a regent, and has memories of her past life. A past life where she was taught to be a ruler, a warrior, and her current and future self is sometimes referred to as the goddess of war. She is pragmatic and practical when confronted with something that could be seen as a threat, and will deal with it as swiftly as possible. She will absolutely kill if it's necessary, and she doesn't hesitate to do it, and that's a facet of her moral code that reveals itself as early as her debut chapter where she incinerates Jadeite.

Insecurities/Personal Demons: Rei has a few personal demons that she struggles with quite regularly. The biggest ones are loneliness and abandonment. When Rei's mother died and she was all but abandoned by her father this scarred her deeply. It left her emotionally distant and when coupled with her emerging psychic abilities and the ostracism she endured the worry only grew. Rei at one point states that before she met Usagi and Ami, her only friends were Phobos and Deimos, a part of crows that lived at the shrine. Also due to this Rei is somewhat insecure about her psychic abilities and will often hide them until she gets very close to someone.

Another important insecurity is Rei's worries about being completely open with someone. She says at one point she feels pursuing romance and even close friendships with her is a mistake because she worries she'll just want to take and take more and more, and eventually cross a line. This particular insecurity is still rooted in abandonment, and typically manifests as Rei just trying to separate herself and remain aloof. It doesn't work though.

Finally, she has a deep seeded difficulty in trusting people. She walls herself off because she's been treated badly, and that has soured her in some ways. she can seem bitter and relying on others is a challenge for her. Rei will usually choose to operate on her own if she can.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses:

As Rei Hino

-Psychic Abilities: Rei, unlike most of her companions, possesses supernatural talents in her human form. She’s an onmyouji, a practitioner of a form of traditional Japanese occult study, that was used for a variety of reasons in the distant past. She’s capable of using her powers to garner limited glimpses into the future (usually in dreams), she has a kind of danger sense (much like Spider-Man), and she’s able to sense emotions in people and places. These often come in the form of cryptic visions seen in flames and warnings, a chill on the back of her neck and other similar displays. She’s also able to sense, bind and seal spiritual beings with scrolls she prepares, craft charms that offer a variety of minor protections and blessings (good luck, etc), and she can manipulate fire to a limited degree with her will. Though that may be because she’s also Sailor Mars more than an onmyouji. Any of her powers that relate to another person would require strict permission from a player (with a permissions post in Rei’s journal), and mod permission for them to work on any NPC would be asked for each time it may come up.

-Martial Arts: Rei practices both Kyuudo and Aikido, two martial arts traditionally associated with shrine maidens. Kyuudo is archery and Aikido is a defensive style of hand to hand. She’s in good shape and practices regularly.

-Intelligence: Rei's able to keep up intellectually with Ami Mizuno, who has a canon IQ of 300 (somehow?). She's well educated, well read, and speaks multiple languages. She's familiar with obscure aspects of the Japanese occult, and is well versed in many of the humanities.

-Transformation: Rei has the ability to transform into Eternal Sailor Mars, drawing on her Sailor Crystal (which is literally her heart) to do so. Mars is one of the Sailor Senshi and she’s imbued with many supernatural abilities and skills.

As Sailor Mars

-Martian: Mars isn't human. She looks like one, but there are differences. Most of them come in the form of her divine powers, but there are some mental changes as well, mainly her personality becoming more bold and aggressive. Sailor Senshi are somewhat complicated because they aren't always treated as human after they transform and are often referred to as the guardian goddesses of their respective planets.

-Pyromancy: This is Mars’s signature power, the ability to create and manipulate fire on a fairly massive scale. She conjures enormous blasts of flame, changes it’s shape into all sorts of things. She has a variety of special attacks like any magical girl series but also tends to use unnamed elemental attacks against weaker enemies. She’s created walls of fire, swarms of small fireballs, pinprick sized needles of fire, and all sorts of other things in addition to the huge explosive shots. There is a holy/cleansing quality to her attacks as well, as they burn away the evil and corruption in her enemies with a sort of sacred, purifying effect and seem to hurt evil beings more than others.

-The Mars Arrow: Mars can conjure a bow of holy fire out of her heart. It’s got an incredible range, and once fired it never misses (unless there’s some interference or intercession like a shield or magic). It fires arrows made of her magic fire instead of normal arrows, so she never runs out of shots.

-Psychic Abilities: Being in this form amplifies Rei’s psychic senses and powers a good bit.

-Senshi Powers: All Sailor Senshi are something far more than human, and they have many abilities in common and Rei/Mars is no exception. They all have a Sailor Crystal, which is basically the crystallized essence of the planet they’re the guardian of. The crystals power their abilities and give them near inexhaustible supplies of magical power. They’ll continually be reborn so long as their crystal exists, ensuring that as long as the planet survives it will have a guardian ‘goddess,’ as explained by Sailor Star Healer. They’re granted a kind of agelessness and immortality by the crystal (they stop aging in their early 20s). The crystal provides the ability to teleport over long distances if linked with others, and to combine energy into an all out attack as a group of two or more. Sailor Senshi are able to survive in a vacuum, in extreme temperatures, and underwater with no difficulty when transformed. Moreover, all Sailor Senshi are capable of flight and levitation, and possess some degree of super strength, speed, and durability. Mars is physically one of the strongest according to Neptune, though she’s the least durable by far. She’s something of a glass cannon, which is why she tends to stay back and throw magic. Her crystal does decrease her body’s healing time, so bad injuries heal more quickly than a human's, though. Mars is somewhat middle of the pack when it comes to speed, able to move across Tokyo in a matter of minutes but hardly approaching speeds like Sailor Moon and Sailor Uranus.

And finally, there’s some sort of magic that protects their identities. Sailor Mars and Rei Hino are not the same person, appearing completely different from one another unless the person viewing them has seen them transform or is told directly by the senshi in question. That breaks the illusion completely.

Weaknesses:

There aren't any real 'weaknesses' like Kryptonite to any of Rei's abilities. There are a couple of personality traits tied to them that act as a weakness, however.

-Secrecy: Rei tries to keep most of her abilities a secret, because they're meant to work in her role to protect someone and that's best done by not drawing attention to herself and those around her. The magical girl stuff she'd be reluctant to use without a good reason. Additionally because of how her powers have drawn fear or misunderstandings, she tends to want to keep that stuff to herself.

-Technological Disinterest: Rei doesn't really care for machines and such, and unless she's forced to learn them she's going to try and avoid using them or learning much about them. She's a traditionalist, so much so that she doesn't even own a TV. I generally treat her as having only touched computers in passing, at school and the like out of necessity. She's not going to be hacking anything or repairing a broken TV anytime soon!

Ability/Power/Magic Warping:

Other than the usual potential warping of Rei's strength/speed, there are a few things I'd like to add. Rei has a bunch of powers that deal with spirits and ghosts

First, I'd like for Rei's psychic abilities to be warped in the following ways. Her precognitive ability will always show her something darker and more horrible than normal. Say for instance she's getting a flash of insight to warn her that a monster's about to ambush her, the warning will be a vision of herself being mauled rather than just knowing when to move. Basically seeing the worst possible outcomes rather than ways to avoid those outcomes. Her spiritual senses I'd like to be affected in such a way that she feels something is watching her. The longer she uses them the more pronounced the feeling becomes, up to and including a sense of something large and predatory closing in on her, though once she stops the feeling goes away. Finally, any flames she manipulates or creates with her mind (in human form) along with any o-fuda scrolls she uses will be covered in a black/purplish, flickering flame rather than ordinary reds and blues.

I'd also like for her transformation to feel different. Rather than a rush of power and light, I'd like for Rei to feel like she's pushing through a layer of gauze, or a funeral shroud. Distinctly like she's having to fight through it even if she isn't really. And her fire magic I want to alter too, so that it's less pure seeming. I want things it burns have a kind of greasy, unclean quality to them, and for it to be a little more difficult to keep the fire from spreading. Visually, I'd also like it if sometimes there are shapes in the flame, like skulls or screaming ghosts.

And lastly, I want to slow down Rei's natural healing to about a quarter of what it is normally. So a broken bone healing in weeks instead of days, a deep cut taking days instead of hours, etc.

Inventory:
1) Miko's Outfit (Hakama, Haori, Socks, Shoes, Ribbons, Belt, Prayer Beads, etc)
2) The Mars Crystal. Literally Rei's heart so I'm not sure if this count as an item, but, it allows her to transform into her alternate form when drawn out.
3) Japanese Longbow and Quiver. A mundane bow and arrow set, asymmetrical and taller than she is.
4) Calligraphy set.
5) Phobos, one of Rei's two pet crows.
6) Deimos, the other crow. Phobos and Deimos are Rei's two guardian senshi, supernatural beings tied to Mars's twin moons. Both Phobos and Deimos can communicate with Rei mentally over great distances, and under certain circumstances can transform into a humanoid form. This ability will be removed while in game, making them simply large and resiliant Japanese crows. To note, Phobos and Deimos have less than 4 lines of dialogue in the entire manga and as such would not likely be appable characters.
Writing Samples: One Sample, and Two Samples. I can provide more if need be, these are both from the most recent TDM.

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Yes, generally. I'd rather not have someone walk right up to Rei and be all "You're Sailor Mars!!!" but 4th walling is fine overall.

What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: The themes in horror I enjoy the most are tension at the unknown, supernatural horror, psychological horror like isolation and altered perception, etc. I'm not huge on body horror.
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: No.
Additional Information: I got nothing!
